This webinar seeks to provide an introduction to the worl
 d of Experts and expert evidence and will examine the role of evidence in d
 isputes resolution, both in the courts and before other tribunals such as a
 rbitral tribunals.  Participants will be acquainted with the law relating t
 o opinion evidence (expert testimony), the role of experts in dispute resol
 ution and the relevant Singapore law applicable to expert evidence.\n
This 
 webinar will be useful for those who come from a technical background and h
 as aspirations of acting as an expert witness.  It would also provide a ‘ba
 sic refresher’ for those who are already practising as expert witnesses.\n

 The webinar is in two parts.  The first part will be a lecture but with an 
 interactive element so that participants may ask questions and discuss rele
 vant issues on the topics as the webinar progresses.  The second part will 
 be a panel discussion by practicing experts moderated by the lecturer, agai
 n with opportunity to engage the panelists.\n

Prof. Leslie Chew SC - President, Asia Pacific Institute of Experts; Dean,
  School of Law at the Singapore University of Social Sciences; Senior Consu

Prof. Leslie Chew SC is the founding a
 nd current Dean of the School of Law at the Singapore University of Social 
 Sciences.  He has practiced law in one form or another for over 4 decades. 
  He was appointed Senior Counsel in 2000.  In 2007 he was appointed a judge
  in the State Courts where he remained until his retirement in 2014.  At th
 e State Courts he was the Senior District Judge leading the Civil Justice D
 ivision.  He retired from the judiciary in 2014. Upon his retirement from t
 he Singapore Legal Service, he returned to law practice. Currently, he is a
  Senior Consultant at RHT Law Asia LLP.  He has an active practice as an ar
 bitrator in International Commercial Arbitrations.





 
Mr. John Gibson –
  Director of Asia, Marine Engineer, Brookes Bell Singapore
Mr. John Gibson 
 was at sea for twenty years before joining the Brookes Bell in 1996. He is 
 a Chartered Engineer, with a Master’s degree, and since 2001 John has been 
 a partner at Brookes Bell. An expert in his field, John uses his extensive 
 consultancy and investigative experience to provide comprehensive assessmen
 ts of marine and offshore casualties and disputes. The type of investigatio
 ns John conducts are as diverse as they are thorough. As a member of the In
 stitution of Fire Engineers John also reports on fatal and non-fatal fires.
  John has provided technical evidence for court proceedings and arbitration
  around the world and for the last 6 years he has been based in Singapore h
 aving set up the Brookes Bell office there. John is also a supporting membe
 r of the LMAA and a member of SCMA

Mr. Iain Potter – Partner,
  Matson Driscoll &amp; Damico Pte Ltd
Mr. Iain Potter specialises in litiga
 tion support and expert witness assignments, in particular those involving 
 business valuations or complex loss of profits claims.  He has been instruc
 ted as an expert in proceedings before courts and arbitral tribunals in a n
 umber of jurisdictions including the UK, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Ind
 ia, Australia and the BVI and has been appointed as a tribunal expert in an
  UNCLOS arbitration.  He is currently pursuing a number of areas of researc
 h, including a PhD with the University of Leicester and is overseeing resea
 rch projects with teams from the National University of Singapore’s Busines
 s School, focussing on shareholder derivative actions and on Singapore-list
 ed companies’ cost of capital.  Iain is a Fellow of the Expert Witness Inst
 itute and a founding Committee Member of the Institute’s Singapore branch.

 





Dr. Tan Teng Hooi – Associate Professor and the Head of the Building

Dr. Tan Teng Hooi is presently an Associ
 ate Professor and the Head of the Building and Project Management Programme
 , School of Science and Technology, Singapore University of Social Sciences
  (SUSS). He is a Chartered Engineer and Professional Engineer, a Fellow of 
 the Institution of Civil Engineers (UK) and the Institution of Engineers Si
 ngapore (IES). In his forty years of engineering career, he has worked in t
 he academia where he lectures, conducts research, provides consultancy in c
 ivil and structural engineering and in the industry as a practitioner. He h
 as also served in many technical committees on standards in SPRING Singapor
 e relating to the construction industry and has served as an Expert Witness
  in several cases in Singapore.\n
