This webinar seeks to provide an introduction to the world of Experts and expert evidence and will examine the role of evidence in disput es resolution, both in the courts and before other tribunals such as arbitr al tribunals. Participants will be acquainted with the law relating to opi nion evidence (expert testimony), the role of experts in dispute resolution and the relevant Singapore law applicable to expert evidence.

This webinar will be useful for those who come fro m a technical background and has aspirations of acting as an expert witness . It would also provide a ‘basic refresher’ for those who are already prac tising as expert witnesses.

The webina r is in two parts. The first part will be a lecture but with an interactiv e element so that participants may ask questions and discuss relevant issue s on the topics as the webinar progresses. The second part will be a panel discussion by practicing experts moderated by the lecturer, again with opp ortunity to engage the panelists.

Part icipants who attend the Course in full will receive a e-Certificate of Part icipation from APIEx.

< strong>Prof. Leslie Chew SC is the founding and current Dean of th e School of Law at the Singapore University of Social Sciences. He has pra cticed law in one form or another for over 4 decades. He was appointed Sen ior Counsel in 2000. In 2007 he was appointed a judge in the State Courts where he remained until his retirement in 2014. At the State Courts he was the Senior District Judge leading the Civil Justice Division. He retired from the judiciary in 2014. Upon his retirement from the Singapore Legal Se rvice, he returned to law practice. Currently, he is a Senior Consultant at RHT Law Asia LLP. He has an active practice as an arbitrator in Internati onal Commercial Arbitrations.

Mr. John Gi bson – Director of Asia, Marine Engineer, Brookes Bell Singapore
Mr. John Gibson was at sea for twenty years before joining the Brookes Bell in 1996. He is a Chartere d Engineer, with a Master’s degree, and since 2001 John has been a partner at Brookes Bell. An expert in his field, John uses his extensive consultanc y and investigative experience to provide comprehensive assessments of mari ne and offshore casualties and disputes. The type of investigations John co nducts are as diverse as they are thorough. As a member of the Institution of Fire Engineers John also reports on fatal and non-fatal fires. John has provided technical evidence for court proceedings and arbitration around th e world and for the last 6 years he has been based in Singapore having set up the Brookes Bell office there. John is also a supporting member of the L MAA and a member of SCMA

Mr. Iain Potter specialises in litigation support and expert witness assignments, in particular those involving business valuations or complex loss of profi ts claims. He has been instructed as an expert in proceedings before court s and arbitral tribunals in a number of jurisdictions including the UK, Sin gapore, Malaysia, Thailand, India, Australia and the BVI and has been appoi nted as a tribunal expert in an UNCLOS arbitration. He is currently pursui ng a number of areas of research, including a PhD with the University of Le icester and is overseeing research projects with teams from the National Un iversity of Singapore’s Business School, focussing on shareholder derivativ e actions and on Singapore-listed companies’ cost of capital. Iain is a Fe llow of the Expert Witness Institute and a founding Committee Member of the Institute’s Singapore branch.

Dr. Tan Teng Hooi is presently an Associate Professor and the Head of the Building and Project Management Pr ogramme, School of Science and Technology, Singapore University of Social S ciences (SUSS). He is a Chartered Engineer and Professional Engineer, a Fel low of the Institution of Civil Engineers (UK) and the Institution of Engin eers Singapore (IES). In his forty years of engineering career, he has work ed in the academia where he lectures, conducts research, provides consultan cy in civil and structural engineering and in the industry as a practitione r. He has also served in many technical committees on standards in SPRING S ingapore relating to the construction industry and has served as an Expert Witness in several cases in Singapore.
